Original Antique E.Cotterill & Co Small Safe.
An early Victorian small steel plate safe in a stunning working condition.
We bring to you this very rare excellent condition E.Cotterill early Victorian safe made from solid steel plate around the 1840's and features the highly desirable Climax Detector lock, which was only fitted to the best safes as it cannot be picked or drilled.
E. Cotterill and Co were established in 1840 by Edwin Cotterill as manufactures of rim mortice, dead, chest, till, cupboard locks and safes. They were recorded as working at Climax Works, Ludgate Hill and later in Vittoria Street and in 1886, 93 Great Charles Street, Birmingham. His most famous lock was possibly the E. Cotterill Climax Detector Lock. It was derived from the Bramah lock, whose patent had by then expired.

This lovely small safe features the original manufacturer's solid cast brass polished plate which reads 'WARRANTED FIRE-PROOF' which surrounds its lovely keyhole escutcheon. The escutcheon has a lovely sliding lid with 'CLIMAX DETECTOR PATENT LOCK BIRMINGHAM' cast into the lid. The fantastic original solid polished brass handle reminds us of a bolt action rifle as the mechanism is solid and has a satisfying latching action in a smoothly working order. The external 'Climax Detector' Bramah derived lock has been serviced and is working smoothly with 2 keys, 1 of which is original. The original key for this safe is a collectable item alone and sell for a surprising amount to key collectors due to the high regard of these locks.
We have sympathetically restored this safe from bare metal and have restored the paintwork to its former glory whilst maintaining original character and metal patina. We have also carefully waxed this paintwork to give a natural shine whilst protecting the painted finish. The spectacular brass work is original, we have carefully polished it to a lovely sheen and have also checked the locking mechanism of this safe which is in perfect working order.
Opening the door reveals a brand new green baize felt-lined interior, which is ideal for not scratching any fine items placed inside. We have also stripped and repainted the remaining interior which was not lined in the same paint as the exterior. This safe is ideal for storing items such as important office files, expensive electronic equipment or anything else of value and is obviously rather safe.
This safe would look fabulous in a loft style apartment or vintage themed home or period office and would certainly be an interesting talking point for guests. This item could also be used as a side cupboard or even drinks cabinet with secure storage.
Please note; This item is in very good condition for its age but will obviously have the odd blemish and scuff here and there however, we feel that this adds to the charm and authenticity of the item with it being antique.
