Product Description

Antique Cabinet Makers Toolbox .

Original Working Lock & Key. Rare Solid Elm Construction. Incredible Patina.

This is an exceptional and heavy-duty Antique Cabinet Maker's or Joiner's Toolbox, dating from the late Victorian or early Edwardian period, circa 1900. This highly desirable chest embodies a piece of social and craft history, as it was likely constructed by the tradesman himself—a common and proud practice that served as a showcase for their own high level of woodworking skill. The chest is primarily constructed from solid, wide planks of richly figured Elm wood, a durable and handsome timber rarely seen used so extensively, even forming the wide-board base. The quality of construction is evident in the finely executed hand-cut dovetail joints at all four corners, which provide exceptional structural integrity. Visually, the elm boasts a striking, warm honey-brown hue that has developed a magnificent deep, aged patina over a century of use, with the authentic surface marks of a working piece only enhancing its character. The original finish has been gently cleaned and waxed to beautifully highlight the natural grain and colour. Functionally, the chest is fully equipped with its original hardware. It features robust wrought iron carrying handles mounted on plates on either end, designed to support the weight of a full set of tools. Security is provided by the original brass lever box lock, which is fully functional and accompanied by its key, charmingly tied with a small red genuine leather ribbon. The hinged lid stays securely open thanks to a solid brass chain mechanism. Internally, the chest maintains its original utilitarian structure, including a removable, compartmentalised wooden tool tray and the original simple wooden mounting blocks on the underside of the lid, intended for securing a hand tenon saw. Beyond its historical value, this piece offers versatile functionality in a modern home, serving as a unique and conversation-starting coffee table, a rustic storage ottoman, or a small blanket chest for anyone who appreciates quality craftsmanship and vintage woodworking history.

Please note; This item is in very good condition for its age but will obviously have the odd slight blemishes and here and there, however, we feel that this adds to the charm and authenticity of the item with it being antique.
