Original Antique Large Victorian Milners Patent Fire Resisting Safe.
An Antique Milners safe in a stunning working condition.
We bring to you this very rare excellent condition Milners Patent Safe made from steel in the Victorian period around C1880. This classic Heritage style safe is a very secure, quarter tonne heavy-duty (260kg) safe featuring a half-inch plate front door, powder proof lock and will resist fires.
The Milners safes were some of the best in its class and at one stage regarded to be one of the largest safe manufacturers in the world. The Milners name still continues today as Chatwood-Milners under the Chubb group brand since 1958.
The 212 patent from Milner is not just a trademark, it represents a fire-resistant mixture of sand, sawdust and alum crystals that were injected into the sides of the box. During a fire, these contents owing to the chemical reaction of the ingredients were guaranteed not to heat up beyond 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
We have sympathetically restored this safe from bare metal including servicing of the locking mechanism and restoring the paintwork to its original specification and former glory including colour matching the original colour inside and out. All of the spectacular brass work is completely original and polished to a lovely sheen.
This lovely safe features the rare original manufacturer's solid brass polished plate of "MILNERS 212 PATENT FIRE RESISTING". The fantastic original solid polished brass knob reminds us of a bolt action rifle as the mechanism is solid and has a satisfying latch action in a smoothly working order. Unfortunately, this knob has got slightly bent at some point as shown in the pictures. The external lock is working smoothly with 2 keys, the keyhole escutcheon has a lovely covering brass cast lid with "MILNERS' SAFE POWDERPROOF SOLID LOCK LIVERPOOL & LONDON" which ensures security. Inside the safe are 2 small secure locking (separately keyed) drawers complete with 1 key for each drawer and a polished brass knob.
This safe is ideal commercial or home offices for storing important paperwork, house deeds, birth certificates, passports, cash or even jewellery and is obviously very safe, fireproof, powder and theft-proof.
This safe would look fabulous in a loft style apartment or vintage themed home and would certainly be an interesting talking point for guests.
Please note; This item is in excellent condition for its age but will obviously have the odd blemish and scuff here and there, however, we feel that this adds to the charm and authenticity of the item with it being antique. We recommend protecting your flooring underneath this safe as the safe will be dirty on the bottom and could damage surfaces because of the large weight.
Also note this item is very heavy (260kg), so please see our delivery section near the end of our listing.
Depth (not including handle): 645mm
Size of internal chamber
Height (not including drawers): 500mm
Please note; this item is VERY HEAVY (260kg) and is a team lift.
Please also note, due to the size and weight of this safe we would be delivering this safe via a pallet delivery which is to the kerbside only and will be the buyer responsibility to transport it into a property. We advise the use of strong sack truck with a ratchet strap securing the safe to the sack truck to aid moving with 2 extra people for stability.
