Antique Victorian Mahogany Chest of 5 Drawers
A Victorian chest of drawers in a truly outstanding condition.
We are delighted to bring to you the finest example of a rare Victorian (circa 1870) 5 deep descending drawer chest of drawers. This unusually high quality chest of drawers features the finest Flame grain book-matched Mahogany veneer to the drawer fronts with cock-beading to the drawer edges which is all complete and without repairs. This very elegant chest of drawers is in a truly outstanding original condition and retains its original and highly sought after lightly faded Mahogany colour and deep glazed French polished finish. The chest has lovely curved front edges with a Flame Mahogany cross-banded top edge and retains its original turned Mahogany knobs held on via its wooden screw threads. The chest is also complete with its brass keyhole escutcheons to front its original brass lever locks (no keys). The drawers are made from solid Satin Walnut internally and show their extremely fine hand-cut dovetails on the sides when the drawers are opened. Unusually the drawers are very clean inside and are very smoothly operating with little to no drawer wear and without having any repairs to the runners. As a small sign of cabinetry quality the drawers can be removed and placed back in up-side down, meaning that the carcass and drawers are all perfectly crafted and are 'square'.
This bank of drawers has one large full depth bottom drawer which goes past the plinth to maximise space. As myths go, these were sometimes used as a cot for small babies which would be lined with blankets. The chest of drawers stands proudly on its 4 turned bun feet.
We have carefully cleaned and waxed this chest, maintaining its original patina whilst giving a lovely natural sheen. The chest has been sympathetically restored and thoroughly checked over in our workshop so is solid with no loose joints or wobbles and has never had any woodworm.
Please note; This item is in fantastic condition for its age as shown by the photographs below. Being an antique item of this age there are obviously marks, scratches and dents, however, we feel that these points are which adds to its charm and character to a piece.
