Product Description

Victorian Aesthetic Movement Trifold Handkerchief Table.

A very rare albertine period table perfect for a hallway.

This exceptional English Mid-Victorian handkerchief table, dating to the poignant mourning period following the death of Prince Albert (C1880), is a masterwork of high-Victorian sentimentality and bespoke cabinetmaking. Constructed from premium solid quarter-sawn Oak, the table features a luminous, medium-honey patina that serves as a dignified backdrop for its dramatic ebonised embellishments. The table's ingenious "handkerchief" design allows it to present a discreet triangular profile when closed, which then unfolds into a substantial hexagonal surface supported by three elegantly swept cabriole legs terminating in hand-carved scroll feet. At the centre of the top sits a striking, stylised floral inlay of genuine ebony, a visual anchor that is mirrored by the exquisitely crafted ebony keyhole escutcheon on the drawer front.
The architectural integrity of the piece is defined by a sophisticated Y-shaped stretcher assembly, which is centred by a hand-turned drop finial. The stretcher rails are joined to the legs by kidney-shaped pierced embellishments, finished in black to emphasise the table's mourning aesthetic and fluid silhouette. Of particular note to the connoisseur is the mechanical artistry of the leaf supports, which utilise exceptionally fine, hand-carved wooden finger joints that deploy with silent precision to ensure a perfectly level surface.
Complementing its external elegance is a cleverly concealed "secret" drawer, masked by the drop-leaf when the table is not in use. This drawer represents the pinnacle of Victorian workshop skill, featuring remarkably thin, hand-cut dovetail joints and retaining its original working lock and key.
The table has been through our workshop so we can assure that it is in fantastic, solid condition, with no joint movement or wobbles. We have cleaned and waxed the table, which retains its original, lightly faded French polished finish, showcasing a lovely patina that can only be achieved with time and care.

It would serve as a magnificent focal point in a hallway, drawing room, or study, providing both useful functionality and rich historical importance. Its unique character ensures it will be a conversation piece and a cherished heirloom for generations to come.

Condition and Provenance As an antique, this table does show signs of age and use. While in fantastic condition, expect minor marks consistent with historical pieces. The table is of a great quality and is structurally sound, with no major damage that would detract from its beauty or functionality.

I bought a restored Victorian table from here. When it arrived, it was wrapped incredibly well in bubble wrap, and had obviously been recently polished. It was immaculate. Friendly service, and a good price. Would definitely use again.
